Nokia: 31% take photos with phones daily, 50% share them online

Yesterday, Nokia Philippines unveiled the results of a consumer research survey that covered “how people around the world take and share mobile photos in everyday situations.”

The phone manufacturer surveyed 8077 people in 8 different countries, including around 800 in the Philippines (respondents were not necessarily users of Nokia phones). The “representative” results show that Filipinos have no qualms over taking photos with their mobiles—and uploading them to social networks.

According to the summary presented by Nikka Abes, Corporate Communications Manager at Nokia Philippines:

  • 70% of Filipinos take photos with mobile devices at least weekly31% even take photos daily.” Only the Chinese are more prolific, with 86% and 33% respectively.
  • But when it comes to sharing photos with others online, Filipinos are in the lead. “As many as 50% of the Filipino respondents typically upload their photos to social media platforms. [This] is typical for 64% of 15-25-year olds.”
  • “Filipinos take pictures with a mobile phone instead of a standalone camera… to quickly capture situations on the move (85%) and share pictures (46%).”
  • “…the next most popular thing to do with photos is to transfer them to a computer (28%) or store them on the phone (16%)… only 5%send their photos directly to family or friends.”

This love for sharing photos was also defined:

  • 47% of Filipinos say that sharing photos is either very important to them or [the] main motivation for taking photos in the first place.”
  • 72% find it wonderful that people can instantly share their photos online, yet… 31%… think that people sometimes share quite embarrassing photos.”

Perhaps equally interesting as our phone photo sharing habits is the fact that 31% “think it is fun to have a smartphone with an unusual color (…second highest… when compared with other countries).” Which is why the Nokia N8 in Pink is now available for sale locally, at the same price as its more understated counterparts. Jessica Zafra, who was viewed the survey presentation, noted that such an unusual color would make the phone easier to spot buried in a woman’s handbag.

More interesting tidbits—including what kind of photos Filipinos tend to share—is available through the slideshow embedded below. The slides are marked as “Company confidential”, yet Mrs. Abes was willing to share the presentation to the audience in its entirety.
